West River is the closest to us, the first river in which we measured turbidity using a Secchi disk (see history)
TOES is a work in progress, intended to be a cost effective tool for collecting turbidity data year around, w/o maintenance, data available for realtime monitoring, alerting, and research.
Apparatus:
TOES devices are installed on docks around the Bay. Each device is composed of:
A probe dipped 1m in the water, which includes a turbidity sensor
An electronic box that includes a microcontroller to control the sensors, periodically collect data, and send them to the web, using Wifi or Cell communication
A battery and charger
The probe is designed to get precise information, and avoid algae build-up.
Our first installation on a dock in Galesville, MD
Each device has two parts: a Box for the electronic and communication and a Probe for the turbidity mesurement.
Two sensors are encapsulated into a sealed probe dived into the water. That probe is connected to the Box with a thin cable that includes power and reading signals.
The Box contains electronic and mictrocontrollers to manage the periodic measurement and its transmission over wifi and/or cell, along with remote CLI for monitoring.
